Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema Festival 2010
Ugh ! My apologies ! I am so late with this post and two days of the 7th Annual Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema festival have already passed ! How did this happen ? If I hadn’t been walking down Cortland last night (on my way home from a lovely meal at the Liberty Cafe wine bar), it is possible that I would have missed this year’s festival entirely. I thank my craving for pizza and Barbera for putting me right in the middle of last night’s “Film Crawl On Cortland”. Now I can pass along information about this awesome event to you.
I had a fabulous time last year at Opening Night when a friend and I caught the screening of The Owls Of Bernal Hill. The outdoor screening had moved indoors due to bad weather but that didn’t dampen the impact of the documentary nor anyone’s spirits that evening! The film was emotional and moving and watching it among my fellow Bernalites was a very cool experience.
Check out the rest of the Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema Schedule – we still have Saturday, Sunday and October 4th to watch wonderful films by local filmmakers, meet our neighbors, explore our neighborhood spaces and just have a grand ol’ time. All of the screenings are FREE, did I mention that yet ? FREE !
As they write on their website:
Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema™ presents the seventh annual season with free screenings of Bernal Heights and local filmmakers’ works in neighborhood parks and open spaces to increase the exposure and recognition of local artists, to heighten appreciation by neighborhood and citywide residents and to bring community together for the enjoyment of our parks and neighborhood resources.

Bernal Heights businesses are taking it to the street!
Bernal Heights businesses are taking it to the street!
Errr, well, to the sidewalks, anyway. On Saturday, May 15, 2010, several Bernal Heights merchants and the like are participating in a multi-business sidewalk sale as part of the San Francisco Small Business Week “Shop Your Neighborhood” event. Take a stroll down Cortland Avenue…grab a coffee at Progressive Grounds, a buttery melt-in-your-mouth croissant from The Sandbox Bakery… and check out the small businesses that make Bernal Heights the most fantastic ‘hood in all of SF (ok, so I’m a little biased). Special thanks go out to the Bernal Business Alliance for helping make this happen.
Before you hike up to the top of Bernal Hill for breath taking views of the city don’t forget to visit fit BERNAL fit where Muttville will be having a dog adoption and outreach event. fit BERNAL fit has generously offered to donate 50% of all initiation fees for new members who sign up on on May 15th to Muttville! Support a great animal rescue group and join a cool gym — it’s a win-win proposition.
Muttville is a senior dog rescue organization and is near and dear to my heart. At Muttville, I found the second (non-human) love of my life, Mr. Mouse. I was a “cat person” and was considering changing teams to become a “dog person” when I found out about Muttville from a friend on their Board. This organization made my transition easy as pie by paving the way with their cute, adorable, loving mutts (of which, we have adopted two).
See you on the street !
Bernal Heights vs. Berkeley – Indoor Street Food 331 Cortland Marketplace Opens
This month, SanFrancisco Magazine had a piece entitled “The Berkeley vs Brooklyn smackdown“. I think they got it all wrong … they should have written an article called “The Bernal Heights vs Berkeley smackdown”. For some time now, our little neighborhood has been giving Berkeley a run for its money (or is that Bernal Bucks ?) for the title of “Gourmet Ghetto” of the Bay Area.
Now, with the opening of The Marketplace at 331 Cortland (@331Cortland on Twitter), an “indoor street food” marketplace, Bernal has decisively grabbed that crown from our neighbor to the east. Even more awesome culinary delights have been added to the already pretty amazing foodie-heaven that is Cortland Avenue :
- Della Terra Organics
- ICHI Lucky Cat Deli
- Wholesome Bakery
- Paulie’s Pickling
- El Porteño Empanadas
- Bernal Cutlery
These 6 new vendors are in good company as they share a zip code with (to name a very few) Piqueos Peruvian Restaurant, Blue Plate, The Front Porch, Liberty Cafe, Vega (and its sister wine bar Vino Rosso where I can sit all night and drink Prosecco), SandBox Bakery, Good Life Grocery, Avedano’s Holly Park Market, and more.
With all of the added calories that Bernal now has to offer, I am making even more use of my membership at Fit Bernal Fit (our very own gym on Cortland). My plan goes something like this: lift some weights, run some intervals, devour a few flaky empanadas and incredible vegan cookies while getting my Wusthof’s sharpened at Bernal Cutlery — all without feeling (too) guilty.
I heard that the building is green and solar powered — can anyone confirm that ?
Enjoy the Bernal Heights lifestyle – Hybrid Car-optional.
PS. @MarriedWDinner – Great blog!
